New York University's women's swimming & diving team won its dual meet (195-84) against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Saturday, November 16, at the Palladium Athletic Facility (PAF) in Manhattan.
This is the first time in four years that the Violets have defeated the Lions.
Junior
Emily Doerner, a big contributor for the team over the past two seasons, won the 100-yard backstroke (
1:00.75), the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.04) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.73). She also participated on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (
1:49.68) alongside freshman Katie Webber, sophomore
Krista Traub and freshman
Sela Wang. This relay team's time broke the PAF record of 1:50.48 set earlier this season.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Freshmen divers
Ashlie Pankonin and
Nia Sorgente both broke NYU records. Pankonin won the one-meter with a team-record score of 309.90, beating the previous record of 284.62 set by Kelly Dietz. Pankonin also came in second place in the three-meter (297.61). Sorgente won the three-meter with a score of 304.20, eclipsing the previous record of 294.75 also held by Dietz. Sorgente also placed second in the one-meter (252.60).
"It was a historic record-breaking day for NYU diving," said Diving Coach
Scott Donie. "I couldn't be more proud of this group of divers. We are in great shape heading into the ECAC's."
- Freshman
Joanna Kostin won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:39.71) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.43).
- NYU freshmen continued to win events.
Allegra Ingerson was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.06),
Akemi Aiello won the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.58), and Wang, in addition to the relay, took first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.87) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.46).
- A member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team, Traub also won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.17) and came in second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.05).
"I was very happy with the team's performance today," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "Coming off a tough two-day meet last weekend and a week of hard practice, I thought we did a great job of getting up and racing. We are ready to swim fast at the ECAC's, and I look forward to seeing us swim again in a few weeks."
The Violets' next competition will be at Lehman College in the Bronx, NY, for the ECAC Championships beginning Friday, December 6, and going until Sunday, December 8.
