Final Results
Competing against some of the top teams in the Northeast in its final event of the season, the New York University women's golf team finished fifth out of seven teams at the Williams Spring Invitational. Williams College hosted the tournament at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, MA, from Saturday-Sunday, April 28-29.
Though it was slightly warmer in Williamstown on Sunday, the course was even windier than it had been on Saturday, increasing already high scores for most individuals and teams in the final round. The wind certainly impacted the Violets, who turned in a season-worst 373 on Sunday for a two-day total of 727 (354-373).
Host and eighth-ranked Williams captured the team championship with 652 (321-331), edging out #18 Middlebury College (662, 333-329) by 10 strokes.
Amherst College (679, 336-343) and Vassar College (687, 341-346) took third and fourth place, respectively.
“With winds gusting 35 miles per hour, it took guessing more than anything with club selection,” said NYU assistant coach
Matt Huck. “The greens were also firm from the cold, which made putting very difficult. The scores were obviously higher than normal for everybody.”
Kristina Shalhoup posted the best finish for the Violets, tying for ninth out of 40 golfers with a 168 (80-88).
Jiye Kim placed 23rd with a 180 (89-91), followed by
Shannon Leonard (188, 89-99) and
Deanna Lee Jia Yi (194, 96-98).
In her final round for NYU,
Meaghan Kenny, the team's lone senior, carded a 96 to finish with a two-day 196 (100-96).
“We're very thankful for the way Meaghan represented the program for the last four years,” commented Huck. “Her dedication was outstanding.”
Middlebury's Flora Weeks earned medalist honors with a two-day total of 159 (78-81). She edged out Williams' Georgiana Salant (161, 78-83) by just two strokes.
The tournament brought an end to the season for the Violets.
“We wish we could have had better conditions to finish the year, but that's what you have to deal with in the spring in the Northeast,” noted Huck. “With just one senior graduating, we still have a very young team, so we're excited about next year and seeing what we can do.”
