The New York University women's golf team had an outstanding final round at the Jack Leaman Championship, moving up three spots to finish fifth out of 12 teams. Amherst College hosted the tournament from Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22.
After playing the first round on Amherst's campus, the teams moved to the Orchards Golf Club, site of the 2004 U.S. Women's Open, for the final round. In addition to the move to the tougher course, the weather also made things challenging, with the players forced to battle through temperatures in the high 40's and light rain all day in South Hadley, MA.
Nonetheless, the Violets had a great final round, as they were one of just three teams to shoot better on day two. After posting an eighth-place 349 in the first round, NYU shot a 348 in the final round, moving up to fifth place with a two-day total of 697.
"I'm very proud of the team's efforts," said assistant coach
Matt Huck. "Our goal going into today was to overtake as many teams as we could, and realistically that's exactly what we did. Everyone really stepped up."
No one stepped up more than
Kristina Shalhoup, who shot six strokes better in the final round as compared to the first. Following an 85 on Saturday, Shalhoup turned in a 79 on Sunday – tied for the third lowest score of the day.
Shalhoup finished the event with a 164, good enough to tie for 14th in a field of 65 competitors.
Deanna Lee Jia Yi and
Jiye Kim both managed to produce similar rounds on each day for a pair of solid performances. Yi followed an 86 with an 87, recording a 26th-place 173. Kim also shot just one stroke higher on Sunday, carding an 89 after a first-round 88, to tie for 30th with a 177.
Meaghan Kenny was the Violets' fourth and final scorer, totaling a 183 (90-93) for the tournament.
Host Amherst held on to win the Jack Leaman Championship despite a charge from #8 Williams College. The Lord Jeffs edged out the Ephs by two strokes, finishing with a 633 (308-325). Williams had the best final round at 319, giving it a 635 (316-319) for the tournament.
Amherst's Laura Monty captured medalist honors with a 154 (75-79). Teammate and younger sister Elizabeth Monty (78-77) and Williams' Victoria Student (77-78) each finished one stroke back at 155.
NYU returns to the links next weekend for its final tournament of the season. The Violets head to Williamstown, MA, to take part in the Williams Spring Invitational from Saturday-Sunday, April 28-29.
