The New York University women's golf team fell just short of defending its title at the McDaniel Spring Invitational, finishing in second place a year after capturing the team championship. McDaniel hosted the tournament at the Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, PA, on Saturday-Sunday, March 31-April 1.
The Violets entered the final round trailing #11 Allegheny College by three strokes, while sitting tied for second in a field of 11 teams with St. Lawrence University. Allegheny and NYU then proceeded to shoot identical 339's on the final day of competition, giving Allegheny the team title at 676 (337-339) and putting the Violets three strokes back in second at 679 (340-339).
SUNY Cortland also shot a 339 in the final round, moving the Red Dragons (680, 341-339) ahead of St. Lawrence (340-344) in the final team standings.
In the fall, NYU finished behind both Cortland and St. Lawrence at its own invitational.
“It was a little bit of a bummer that we ended up in second place, but we played well,” said Violet head coach
Todd Kolean. “To beat St. Lawrence and Cortland after finishing behind them in the fall was really good for us.”
Kristina Shalhoup had the best individual finish for NYU, placing third out of 58 golfers with a two-day total of 162 (80-82). She finished six strokes back of Allegheny's Liz Blyth (156, 79-77), the tournament medalist, and five back of Cortland's Rebecca Studin (157, 78-79).
Jiye Kim landed in a tie for sixth place after carding a 166 (83-83).
Deanna Lee Jia Yi finished tied for 15th with a 176 (89-87), while
Meaghan Kenny rounded out the team's scorers by finishing just one stroke behind Yi at 177 (88-89).
“Kristina played really well, and we're really happy with Jiye,” commented Kolean. “All four of our scorers were underclassmen, so the future looks bright going forward.”
Shannon Leonard shaved four strokes off her score on the par-72, 5,824-yard course in the final round, shooting a season-low 87 to finish with a two-day 178 (91-87). Competing as an individual,
Katherine Pan totaled a 190 (93-97).
The Violets return to the links on Saturday-Sunday, April 14-15, for the Vassar College Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY.
