Final Individual Results
The New York University women's golf team moved up one spot on the final day of competition and finished 15th out of 21 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. Oglethorpe University hosted the prestigious tournament on the par-72, 5,819-yard course at Indian Mound in Jekyll, GA, from Friday-Sunday, March 16-18.
The Violets had their best 18 holes of the invitational in the final round, shooting a 339 to bring their three-day total to 1,207 (347-341-339). That final round score helped the squad overtake Piedmont College (1029, 343-342-344) for 15th place in a field that featured 10 nationally ranked Division III teams.
The tournament was the first 54-hole event in the five-year history of the NYU program and was one of the most competitive the team has ever participated in.
“I'd have liked us to have moved up a few spots, but it was a very strong field and we're a very young team,” said Violet head coach
Todd Kolean. “It was our first 54-hole event, and everybody was tired by the end. But from Friday to Sunday, we did what we were supposed to do – we dropped scores every day.”
Top-ranked and 14-time defending National Champion Methodist University was the wire-to-wire winner, shooting a 942 (311-317-314) to capture the team title by 15 strokes.
The next four team finishers were each one stroke apart. NAIA school College of Coastal Georgia took second at 957 (322-313-322), while #4 Centre College (958, 322-319-317), #13 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (959, 324-321-314) and #12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (960, 331-314-315) followed in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Kristina Shalhoup was NYU's top individual finisher, tying for 22nd with a three-day total of 242 (79-81-82).
Deanna Lee Jia Yi tied for 60th at 256 (87-85-84), with
Jiye Kim not far behind at 258 (92-83-83).
Meaghan Kenny was the Violets' fourth and final scorer with a 271 (89-90-92).
“I can't say enough about Deanna and Jiye over the last three days,” commented Kolean. “They were steady all weekend long, and if it weren't for them we'd have been in a little trouble.
“Kristina hit the ball really well, but she had a little trouble putting,” he added. “She had a couple of double bogeys on the back nine today. I know she was a little disappointed in her score, but she played well.”
Methodist's Jennifer Sullivan captured individual medalist honors with a three-day total of 224 (73-75-76). She won the title by five strokes.
The Violets return to action at the McDaniel Spring Invitational from Saturday-Sunday, March 31-April 1. The tournament will be played at The Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, PA.
