The New York University men's fencing squad won two of six matches at the MIT Invitational on Saturday, February 4, in Waltham, MA.
Following the Invitational matches, the Violets now possess a record of 5-14 in 2011-12.
The Invitational field featured top quality teams, with University of Pennsylvania and Brown University receiving votes in the most recent Men's United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Coaches Poll. NYU fenced Pennsylvania (ranked #7), Brandeis University, Brown, Haverford College, Boston College, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Violets opened against Brown, losing by a score of 19-8.
In round two, NYU lost to Boston College, 14-13. The Violets then lost the third round against Brandeis by a score of 17-10.
In the fourth round, the Violets lost to University of Pennsylvania, 19-8. NYU then took out Haverford 17-10 and followed that up by defeating Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a score of 20-7.
Several Violet fencers displayed tremendous skill throughout the Invitational. Fencing foil, Philip Jamesson finished 10-3.
In epee,
Ricky Woodward was 10-8, while in sabre,
Ben Radding went 9-7.
Assistant coach
Lauren Willock was pleased by how the men competed.
"We had some very good individual performances today, especially from Jamesson," Willock said. "The teams today were very good, and I feel the way we competed will give us confidence for the rest of the season."
