Three men's weapon champions were crowned at the second United States Collegiate Fencing Squad Championships, which were hosted by New York University on Sunday, February 26, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The University of Notre Dame men's foil squad, the St. John's University men's epee team and the University of Pennsylvania men's sabre squad all claimed titles.

In foil, the Violets (seeded fifth) finished the day sixth. Christian Vastola, Philip Jamesson and Andrew Ark fenced for the foil team. NYU won its first match against 12th-seeded Columbia University, 45-30. The Violets got off to a quick start, leading 35-17, but despite a spirited comeback towards the end by Columbia, Jamesson managed to close it out for the win.

In their second match, the Violets came up short against fourth-seeded University of Pennsylvania, losing 45-37.

In epee, the Violets (seeded #9) lost 45-25 against eighth-seeded Brown University and finished ninth. Competing for the Violets were Enrique Cavazos, Aris Altomare and Ricky Woodward.

In sabre, the Violets (seeded #12) lost to fifth-seeded Princeton University by a score of 45-22. Stephan Teng, Ben Radding and Spencer Reckford all competed for the Violets, who finished 12th out of 16 schools.

Head coach Steve Mormando was pleased with how his team did.

“I am very happy with how we competed, especially in foil," Mormando said.“We had our chances but we lost by a few touches. But, I am happy to have hosted this event and I am happier with how we worked as a team. This is a strong tournament, with only around three top teams in the country not coming to compete.”

The NYU squads returns to action on Sunday, March 11, at the NCAA Regional Championships at Boston College.
