In the final game of the 2012-13 NYU Holiday Classic, the New York University women's basketball team fell 68-59 to William Smith College on Sunday, December 30, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Both Megan Dawe and Riley Wurtz of the Violets (6-4) were named to the All-Classic Team. Dawe led NYU against the Herons (6-3), notching her first career double-double with career highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds (11 on the offensive glass). Wurtz totaled eight points, a career-high 17 boards, three assists, and three steals.

Highlights

- The Violets (6-4) trailed by 14 with 10 minutes to play before cutting the deficit to two with 4:25 left. However, William Smith responded with six straight points, including a big three from All-Classic honoree Sydni Salvatore, to go back up eight.

- NYU again made it a one-posession game, this time 62-59, on a Melissa Peng trey with 1:19 remaining. The Herons again came up with a big basket, however, as Sasha Borenstein sank a pull-up jumper with 54.8 ticks on the clock. From there, William Smith hit four free throws to seal the victory.

- The Violets trailed by 10 late in the first half before closing the period on an 11-3 run. Dawe had nine of those points during the spurt, cutting the Herons' halftime lead to just two at 30-28.

- William Smith controlled the first 10 minutes of the second period, going up 54-40 before NYU's late run. Rachel Crittenden scored eight points during a 14-2 spurt that made it a two-point game, but the Violets could not get over the hump in the final minutes.

- Crittenden finished with 10 points and a career-best eight rebounds off the bench. Peng added seven points and three assists.

“For this team, every game is about finding moments to gain confidence,” said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. “Yesterday we showed we can win close games. We're still figuring out how to win ugly games.

“I'm really proud of Megan,” she added. “She had a tough game yesterday, and I challenged her and she really responded.”

NYU returns to action on Saturday, January 5, when it travels to rival Brandeis University for its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener. Tip-off is at 1:00 pm in Waltham, MA.
