Despite sinking a season-high seven three-pointers, the New York University women's basketball team fell 77-55 at second-ranked and unbeaten University of Chicago on Friday, January 20, at the Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago, IL.
The Maroons (15-0, 4-0), who entered the game ranked #2 in the nation by both D3hoops.com and
USA Today/ESPN, extended their regular-season winning streak to a Division III-best 33 games, as well as their home winning streak to 19 contests.
The Violets (9-6, 1-3) hung tough early with the defending University Athletic Association (UAA) Champions, with
Shelby Coon tying the game at 9-9 near the midway point of the first half. The Maroons began to take over after that, going up 14 on a Joan Torres three, before NYU fought back. The Violets scored 10 of the final 14 points of the half to enter the locker room down just eight, 35-27.
“I thought we came out well and kept fighting in the first half,” said NYU head coach Stefano Trompeo. “But falling behind on the road against a great team is very hard to overcome.”
Chicago pulled away to start the second half, scoring the first seven points of the period and going on a 13-2 run to take a 19-point lead with 14:35 to play. The Violets could not chip away the rest of the game, never getting closer than 16.
“The start of the second half was the opposite of the first half,” commented Trompeo. “We didn't execute as well and didn't set the right tone. I give Chicago a lot of credit – they played hard and to their strengths.”
Cara Bonito led NYU with 11 points and three assists, sinking three of the Violets' seven three-pointers.
Whitney Hooper also drained three trifectas for a career-high nine points, while Coon and
Erica Franke also had nine points apiece.
Preseason National Player of the Year Taylor Simpson led all scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Morgan Herrick netted 12 points, while Torres doled out five assists.
NYU returns to action on Sunday for its third straight game against a Top-10 opponent. The Violets will take on #7 Washington University on the Bears' home court in St. Louis, MO, at 2:00 pm central.
