Box Score

The New York University women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 71-49 loss to Emory University on Friday, January 13, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Eagles (10-3, 1-1) entered the game with the sixth-highest scoring average (78.8 points per game) in Division III and lived up to the ranking, as they became the first team to score at least 70 points against the Violets (9-4, 1-1) this season.

Though NYU shot 46.7% (21-45) from the floor – its second-highest team field-goal percentage this season – the squad committed 21 turnovers and could not keep up with the Emory attack.

The Eagles used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to build separation and take a 21-8 lead. NYU cut it to seven on a Tana Bertino three, but Emory came right back with a 7-0 spurt and eventually entered the locker room leading 33-21.

The Eagle lead was still 12 early in the second half when the squad went on a 9-0 run to take a 48-27 advantage. The Violets would get no closer than 19 the rest of the way.

Makenzie Hirz scored a season-high 13 points to lead NYU. Shelby Coon had eight points and 12 rebounds, while Bertino totaled seven points and three assists.

Hannah Lilly led Emory with 21 points. Misha Jackson (12 points) and Becca Feldman (10 points) also scored in double figures, while Danielle Landry narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

The Violets return to the court on Sunday when they host fifth-ranked University of Rochester at Coles. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
