Women's Volleyball Wins One and Loses One at Nazareth Invitational

Violets Defeat Hosts and Fall to Salisbury

The New York University women's volleyball team split its two matches on the final day of competition at the Narareth College Golden Flyer Invitational, which was held on Friday and Saturday, September 9-10,  in Rochester, NY .

The #17 ranked Violets (AVCA/Coaches Division III Poll)   defeated host Nazareth in  defa   defeated host Nazareth (4-5)  in four sets after dropping a grueling five-set match to Salisbury University (7-1) earlier in the day. 

In its first match, NYU (5-3) rallied from a 2-0 deficit, but fell short against Salisbury.

After dropping the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19, the Violets reversed the momentum and recorded 25-21 and 25-12 victories in sets three and four, respectively.

However, NYU could not complete the comeback and dropped the fifth and deciding set by a score of 15-10.

The Violets' Sarah Buckingham tied for match-high honors with 19 kills, while Alex Mao had 12 and Kolby Warren added 11. Warren also had a team-high five blocks.

Hope Bogle led the Violets with 24 set assists and added 10 digs. Kaylee Schanda led the team with 19 digs. 

Chelsea Glowacki had 19 kills for the Sea Gulls (7-1).

NYU won its first match of the invitational in its last match, defeating the host school 20-25, 29-27, 25-19, 25-19.

"We played a much calmer game against Nazareth then we did against Salisbury," said head coach Jolie Ward. "We played with more experience and confidence."

Buckingham, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, posted a match-high 21 kills. Mao again reached double digits with 14.

Bogle compiled a match-high 43 set assists and added 11 digs, while Schanda recorded 29 digs.

Amy Johnson had 11 digs and Brittany Crochetti compiled 30 assists for the Golden Flyers.

"We talked between matches about keeping our composure and not getting too down when things get tough," Ward added. "You could see that our feeling and demeanor was different in that second match."

The Violets return to action on Wednesday when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:00pm at the Coles Sports Center.
