The New York University men's fencing team snared two victories in three matches against stellar opponents on Wednesday, February 9, in home competition at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
NYU started strong, defeating Vassar College 19-8. The Violets' sabre and foil squads spearheaded their victory over the Brewers. The foil team contributed an especially spectacular performance, sweeping all nine bouts in the match.
The Violets lost a close contest to their next opponent, Sacred Heart University, by a score of 15-12. Again, the NYU foil squad fenced well, winning six of nine bouts.
The last match provided intense drama, as NYU squeaked past eighth-ranked Columbia University with a final flourish. Entering the final three bouts of the evening, set to be held on the sabre strip, NYU and Columbia were locked in a stalemate at 12-12. With all other bouts decided, the Violet and Lion fencers surrounded the salle to cheer on their teammates.
And, the NYU fencers did not disappoint. Jonathan Tang won a 5-3 decision, and then captain Ben Radding buried the Lions with a sweep of his opponent, an effort that earned thunderous approval from his teammates.
Overall, the foil team finished competition with a 21-6 mark. Philip Jamesson continued his dominant season, winning eight of nine bouts.
"Phil continues to show great concentration and good physical awareness on the strip," said NYU head coach Steve Mormando.
Other NYU fencers contributed comparable excellent performances. Hugo Rodrigues won seven of nine bouts in sabre and Byron Neslund compiled a 6-3 epee record.
"The men had an outstanding evening with a terrific upset win over Columbia, one of our
historical rivals," Mormando said.
The Violets return to action on Feb. 27 for the inaugural National Squad Championships, also at the Coles Sports Center.
