The New York University men's fencing team opened its 2011-12 season on Sunday, November 6, at the Temple Open in Philadelphia, PA.

The Violets faced stiff competition from the tournament field which included host Temple University, Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Faced with these tough challengers, the Violets scored some impressive results in both foil and epee.

In foil, freshman Andrew Ark, competing in his first collegiate competition, placed third in the weapon. Junior captain Phillip Jamesson finished ninth.

“I am very pleased to see our best result was by a freshman,” said assistant coach Lauren Willock. “This shows great promise for the rest of the season.”

In epee, NYU had three athletes finish in the top 10. Junior Justin Powell took seventh place, while senior captain Ricky Woodward ended in ninth. Rounding out the top 10 was another freshman, Aris Altomare.

The Violets' top performer in epee was senior captain Ben Radding, who finished 18th.

The Violets are back in action against Drew University on Thursday, Nov. 10, in a home match at the Coles Sports Center.
