The New York University women's swimming & diving team was edged by The College of New Jersey 143-138 on Saturday, November 19, at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan.
Despite losing to a Lions' squad that placed fifth at last season's NCAA Championships, the Violets produced several winning performances.
Captain
Molly Rippe (10:56.64) and
Marisa Ayvaliotis (11:01.00) finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while
Kristen Fujii won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.00.
The Violets' also recorded a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard IM, with
Megan Rappa (2:13.29),
Silke Herold (2:15.01) and
Gabby Borutecene (2:15.15) taking the top three spots. Herold also won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.66.
"The TCNJ meet is always fun, and was close from start to finish," said acting head coach
Kacey McCaffrey. "Each of our swimmers stepped up and rose to the high level of competition."
NYU (3-3) also produced a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of
Emily Doerner, Fujii,
Nina Rusiewski, and
Savanna Keator posted a time of 3:39.96.
The NYU divers also had a good showing.
Kelly Dietz not only dove well, winning the one-meter dive (264.53) and taking second in the three-meter dive (268.35), but had also produced two NCAA qualifying scores.
Kate Donnelly took third in both the one- and three-meter dives, with respective scores of 209.26 and 202.35.
The Violets will next compete on Friday and Saturday, December 2-3, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational in Cambridge, MA.
