NYU Invitational Results

The New York University men's fencing team competed against several quality opponents when it hosted the NYU Invitational at the Coles Sports Center on Saturday, January 22.

Among those who came to New York City for the event, four teams (the University of Notre Dame, Ohio State University, St, John's University, and Columbia University) were ranked among the top eight in the nation in the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Division I Poll.

“It was a spectacular event, one of the marquee competitions of the season," said NYU head coach Steve Mormando.  "Four of the top eight Division I teams in the nation were here.”

Overall, the Violets went 1-4 in the competition and are now 4-8 this season.

NYU's lone victory was recorded against Wayne State University, 21-6.  The Violets' foil and epee teams both went 8-1.

Several individuals parried especially well against Wayne State.  Both Christian Vastola and Philip Jamesson went undefeated in three foil bouts, while Byron Neslund and Ricky Woodward combined for a 6-0 tally in epee.

In addition to the win over Wayne State, NYU fell to top-ranked Notre Dame 23-4, to #3 St. John's 19-8, to #5 Ohio State 21-6, and to Yale University 18-9.

Even in the Violets' losses, individual weapons' teams battled effectively.  Against St. John's, NYU won five of the nine foil bouts, spearheaded by Vastola and Jamesson with two victories each.

Against Ohio State, Jamesson's 3-0 mark helped the Violets win four of nine foil bouts.

Jamesson ended the Invitational with an 11-3 bout record, and is now 26-9 overall in 2010-11.  Hugo Rodrigues went 8-5 in sabre, pushing his season mark to 19-15.

The Violets return to action on February 6 at the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
