The New York University men's golf team held on to capture its first University Athletic Association Golf Championship in school history on Monday, April 26, in Rochester, NY.

The Violets finished second at the UAA Championship in 2004 and in 2007.

Playing on the 6,186-yard, par-72 Locust Hill Country Club golf course in Rochester, the Violets carded a second-round tally of 306, one stroke better than the first round, to come in with a total of 613. Emory University, ranked 14th in the current GOLF WORLD Division III poll, came in second place overall and Rochester University finished third.

Senior Mike Leibfried was almost perfect on day two with a one-under 71. He had a chance to win the individual title with a three-stroke lead going to the 18th hole, but Emory's Ryan Dagerman birdied the hole while Leibfried double-bogeyed. Dagerman won the title on the third hole of a playoff.

“He just missed that (#18) a little bit, but he went for it,” said NYU head coach Todd Kolean. “You can always second guess, but if he was shooting lights out birdies before that so we went for it.”

NYU pretty much swept the season UAA awards, as Kolean was named Coach of the Year and Gabe Durkin was named Rookie of the Year. Leibfried and Durkin also received First Team All-UAA honors as David Su received Second Team honors.

NYU held an eight stroke lead over Emory coming out of the first round of play Sunday. The Eagles came close on day two by shooting 15 strokes better, but couldn't edge the Violets in the end.

Durkin finished in fourth place overall because of his steady play and total of 153 (76, 77). Su fired a 158 (81, 77) as sophomore Matt Riccio and junior Ben Kleiner matched each other with scores of 160, making all five members of the team contributors to the win.
