The New York University men's golf team was able to hold onto its first-round lead at the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Spring Invitational in Cranston, RI, and turn it into its first win of the spring season on Sunday, April 18.

The Violets took the team title after shooting almost identical scores in each round for a 607 (303-304) on the par-71 Cranston Country Club course that measures 6,493 yards. Babson finished in second place with a 613 (308-305).

Junior David Su (72-74) and Salem State senior Jeffrey Santora (75-71) tied for medalist honors with a 146 for the weekend. Santora took home the individual honors after winning a two-hole playoff on Sunday.

“The rest of the teams played better today, but we were able to hold our own,” said NYU head coach Todd Kolean “We're really proud of all five guys and how they performed this weekend.”

The rest of the Violets swung well throughout the weekend, with two players taking top-10 finishes. Senior Mike Leibfried (76-76) finished in fifth overall while freshman Gabe Durkin (76-79) had one of the best outings of his career by finishing tied for ninth.

Rounding out the scoring for NYU were junior Ben Kleiner (81-75) and sophomore Matt Riccio (79-80).

The men's golf team will be back in action next weekend, April 25-26, as they travel to the University of Rochester to compete in the University Athletic Association Championship.
