Men's Soccer Awaits Big Test

Violets Take on Division II Powers in Spring Tournament

Scardino (8) hopes to build on his strong freshman season.

On Saturday, April 24, the New York University men's soccer team will compete in an out-of-season tournament at Dowling College in Oakdale, NY. The Violets will take on the host Dowling College and Bloomfield College, both Division II powers.

“We have a very good tournament lined up against very tough teams,” said NYU head coach Joe Behan. “The teams we are playing are very quick up top. And they are already in season, so they will be more match fit. It'll be a big test for us”

The NCAA allows one play-date for Division III soccer teams during the off-season, so this tournament will be an important stage for NYU players to impress Behan in advance of the 2010 season.

“We're going to get a chance to see some of our guys who didn't play as much during the fall, and we will also continue to build on our strategies,” said Behan. “The spring season is quite big for us. It's a great opportunity for our players to win a spot for the fall.”

During the 2009 season, the Violets went 7-8-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the highly competitive University Athletic Association. Among NYU's key returnees in 2010 will be the high-scoring sophomore duo of Kyle Green, who scored five goals and tallied three assists as a rookie, and Ronny Scardino, who notched three goals in his debut season.
