Men’s Soccer Battles #3 Emory in Atlanta

Strong First Half by Violets Not Enough

The New York University men's soccer team continued its season against University Athletic Association (UAA) competition on Saturday, Oct. 18, taking on the third-ranked Eagles of Emory University.

The Violets totaled the most goals scored on the Eagles in a half this season, but could not complete the job, falling 6-3.

NYU stunned the Eagles early in the road match, when Wilhelm Frisell played an expert through ball to a speeding Keyon Namdar. The junior forward was clinical from point-blank range for his first goal as a Violet, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

The goal was just the second scored on Emory at home this season.

Emory leveled the match ten minutes later when Danny Moya fed Adeyemi Oni off a throw-in, tying the match at 1-1.
Oni doubled his count in the 20th minute, giving Emory a 2-1 lead.

The Violets were ready with an answer. Ethan Zarka dribbled the ball into the Eagles' 18-yard box and all the way to the touchline before delivering a cross to Giulio Potenti, who headed one home to tie the match at two.

NYU regained the lead in the 29th minute. The Violets played a long ball to the box, where Terra Nagai took advantage of a turnover by the Eagles' backline and created a one-on-one chance with the keeper. Nagai sidestepped the approaching Emory keep and put the Violets ahead, 3-2.

Emory was unfazed by the Violet halftime lead, drawing level in the first seven minutes of the second half. Ignacio Cubeddu put the Eagles in front less than two minutes later.

The Eagles tacked on two more goals in the final 30 minutes for the 6-3 victory.

The three Violet goals stand as the most scored against Emory this season. NYU keeper Ludvig Hilberts finished the day with a season-high eight saves.

NYU returns to action for a home weekend of UAA competition, hosting Carnegie Mellon on Friday, Oct. 24 on Case Western Reserve on Sunday, Oct. 26.
