Senior Fencers Shine at Columbia Quad-Meet

Roukas, Hammond, and Stanco go 8-1

Andrew Stanco was 8-1 in men's epee.

The New York University men's fencing team traveled uptown in New York to face three other teams at Columbia University on Wednesday, Feb. 3, and returned home with a pair of victories.

The Violets defeated Vassar College 17-10 in the first of their three matches for the evening before falling to Sacred Heart by a narrow 14-13 margin. To finish out the night, NYU took down Columbia 19-8. The 2-1 outing improves NYU's record to 10-13 overall for the season.

Several Violet seniors had impressive nights overall to lead the team. In men's sabre, seniors Sam Roukas and Jared Hammond went 8-1 while senior Andrew Stanco also put up an 8-1 mark for the Violets in men's epee.

Hammond had perfect performances against Sacred Heart and Columbia as Roukas went 3-0 versus Vassar and Columbia. NYU earned its only sweep of the night against Columbia in sabre, with junior Kyle Wilson picking up three wins along with Hammond and Roukas.

Stanco also swept his competition against Vassar and Columbia. Freshman Phil Jamesson followed up his University Athlete of the Week performance at the Eric Sollee Invitational at Brandeis University with a 6-3 night in men's foil.

With the regular season wrapped up, the Violets now look forward to the postseason. NYU will return to the strip as a team March 14 when the team will compete at the NCAA Regionals at Brown University in Providence, RI.
