Violets Stopped by UAA-Rival Chicago

Grace Carmen led all scorers with 18 points.

Box Score

Although the New York University women's basketball team weathered a 12-0 surge and pulled within six points with 6:54 remaning, the University of Chicago never let the Violets pull any closer en route to a 73-52 victory over its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Friday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Michaela White scored eight straight points during a 12-0 surge that helped the Maroons regain control after the Violets (13-8, 5-5 UAA) climbed within 51-45 on a Grace Carmen basket with 6:54 left. Carmen's final tally of 18 points was her second highest this season. White led Chicago with 17 points, nine boards, three assists, and three steals.

Well before White's decisive scoring spree, Chicago was seemingly in the clear. Its first 12-0 run of the half, combined with keeping NYU scoreless for 7:24, enabled the Maroons to seize a seemingly insurmountable 49-32 cushion with 10:32 remaining.

A pair of Hailey Kimball (15 points) three-point plays highlighted a 13-2 NYU rally that whittled the Maroons' lead down to a tenuous 51-45, but was just another of the one-sided spurts that told the story of this contest.

After spotting the Maroons the first 10 points of the game, the Violets got five tallies each from Kimball and Bianca Storts (9 points) to highlight a 17-1 burst that culminated in a 20-15 NYU lead 7:33 before the break. It was easily the Violets' most productive part of the opening half, as the home team went 5-for-11 (45.5%) from three-point range, but made just seven of its 28 field-goal tries (25.0%).

Before NYU got too comfortable with the lead, though, Jenna Lillemoe (16 points) netted all eight of her first-half tallies during a 17-5 spurt that gave Chicago a 32-25 halftime advantage. Molly Hackney (15 tallies) led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with nine points, as the Maroons shot 44.4% (12-for-27) from the field and went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Overall, Chicago shot 46.7% (28-for-60) from the floor and 43.8% (7-for-16) from three-point range while owning a 49-28 rebounding edge.

NYU hit just 30.4% (17-for-56) of its attempts overall, but fared better from beyond the arc (7-for-21, 33.3%) and at the charity stripe (11-for-14, 78.6%).

NYU will play its final regular-season home game Sunday, Feb. 14, when it hosts #6-ranked Washington University at 2 p.m. The Violets will honor seniors Carmen, Kimball, and Jen Hum-Traverso - as well as junior Emily Foshag, who is graduating in three years this May - prior to the contest.
