On Saturday, Jan. 30, the New York University men's swimming & diving team finished its dual-meet season with a victory over host Vassar College. Behind sophomores James Bedell and Bryson Naylor, the Violets (7-4) posted a 140-101 win over the host school in NYU's final dual meet of the season.
Bedell contributed first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (22.08) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.60). Naylor raced to victory in the 200 freestyle (1:47.59) and the 200 butterfly (2:00.94). Both the 200 backstroke for Bedell and the 200 butterfly for Naylor were events not normally reserved for the sophomores. Head coach Bob Sorensen, however, saw that much of the event changes benefited the Violets.
"We tossed our lineup around to help some guys for the University Athletic Association Championships," Sorensen said. "Some guys can fall into a rut mentally, and a change of event can dig them out of it, like it did today for some of our guys."
Freshman Ross Gormley posted a victory in the 1,000 freestyle (10:46.88), and added second-place times of 4:21.01 in the 400 individual medley and 5:12.31 in the 500 freestyle. Junior Steven Oates claimed victory in the 500 freestyle (5:08.41).
Behind senior Eric Pcholinski (49.18), sophomore Philip Anton (51.49) and freshman Matt Schechter (53.30), the Violets finished one-two-three in the 100 freestyle.
On the diving board, junior Max Norris took second place in both diving events with scores of 263.47 in the one-meter dive and 229.65 in the three-meter dive.
"Overall, I'm satisfied with our 7-4 dual-meet record," Sorensen explained. "Now I'm looking forward to NYU swimming its best at UAA's."
The UAA Championships will be held from Feb. 17-20 at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
