The New York University men's fencing team hosted its annual invitational at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Saturday, Jan. 23, and put up some solid performances against some of the top fencing teams in the nation.
Five teams ranked in the U.S. College Fencing Coach's poll competed at the invitational: #2 University of Notre Dame, #3 Ohio State University, #5 Columbia University, #8 St. John's University, and #9 Yale University.
The Violets won one of their five matches in the competition, raising their overall record to 4-9 on the season.
“While we may not have beaten anyone overall besides Wayne State, we competed well against a lot of those fencers out there,” said NYU head fencing coach Steve Mormando.
After falling to Ohio State 17-10 in the first round, NYU rebounded to defeat Wayne State University in the second by a score of 21-6.
The Violets dropped their third-round match to St. John's by a close score of 14-13. NYU ended the day with losses to Yale (20-7) and Notre Dame (20-7)
Freshman Phil Jamesson was the Violets' top performer of the day, posting a 10-3 record in foil, including two 3-0 marks against St. John's and Wayne State.
Another stellar performance came from members of NYU's epee team. Trying to stave off a sweep at the hands of Notre Dame, junior Byron Neslund and senior captain Andrew Stanco went 3-0 and 2-1, respectively, for the Violets to go along with a solid day overall.
The team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30, as it travels to Cambridge, MA, for the MIT Invitational.
