The New York University men's swimming & diving team did everything but pull out a victory against a powerful Springfield College squad at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan on Saturday, Jan. 16, falling to the visitors 167-133.
"Although we lost today, I am pleased with the effort," said NYU head coach Bob Sorensen. "We really matched up well with Springfield, but unfortunately came out on the losing end."
Violet sophomore Bryson Naylor was identified as Sorensen's "MVP of the Meet." Naylor posted victories in the 200 individual medley (2:01.51), the 500 freestyle (4:52.67) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:03.96).
"Bryson doesn't normally swim the 1,000, but we called on him today and he answered with a victory," Sorensen revealed.
Other highlight performances for the Violets included a first-place time of 21.30 in the 50 freestyle for senior sprinter Eric Pcholinski. He also claimed victory in the 100 freestyle (46.96).
Sophomore James Bedell finished right behind Pcholinski in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.45, and also contributed first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:46.12) and in the 100 butterfly (52.21).
The 400 freestyle relay team, comprised of Bedell, Naylor, junior captain Andy King, and Pcholinski, raced to victory in 3:16.38.
On the diving board, junior Max Norris posted a second-place and season-high score of 280.95 in the one-meter event. That total also surpassed NCAA qualifying standards. In the three-meter dive, he tallied a third-place total of 261.38.
"Max really impressed me today," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie. "He held his own against some of the best divers in the country."
The Violets return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they host The College of New Jersey.
