Despite taking a two-set advantage over Division I rival Harvard University, the New York University men's volleyball team fell in five sets on Senior Day, Saturday, March 28, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (6-18, 2-3 EIVA Hay), currently ranked #10 in the Bison/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, took control of the match early, taking the first two sets behind an overpowering offense and a strong backcourt. However, a change at Libero for the Crimson (9-6, 4-1 EIVA Hay) seemed to give them the spark they needed, as they took the final three sets, winning the match 3-2 (28-30, 33-35, 30-26, 30-26, 15-13).
On offense for the Violets, senior captain Devin Zolnowski tallied 30 kills, becoming one of just four NYU players during the rally-scoring era to record at least 30 in a match. Along with his kill total, Zolnowski also added a career-best 14 digs.
Fellow senior captain Ilan Goldstein also put together a career match, tallying an NYU rally-scoring record with 80 assists. He added 13 digs and two blocks. Goldstein's assist total marks just the sixth time in the history of NYU volleyball that a player has reached the 80-assist plateau.
Junior Michael Ferragonio was the third Violet to set a career milestone in the match, putting down a career-high 23 kills while also recording 11 digs for his second double-double of his career.
Also on defense for the Violets, freshman Jay Hayes notched his 14th double-digit digs match of the season, putting up 10 digs while passing a perfect 29 for 29.
For the Crimson, senior Brady Weissbourd was unstoppable, putting down a match-high 31 kills while hitting .349 and adding a team-high seven digs.
The Violets return to action on Tuesday, March 31, when they host Division I Princeton University at 7:00 pm.
