The New York University men's fencing team defeated all three of its opponents on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets, now 11-10 this season, defeated Vassar College (17-10), Sacred Heart University (16-11) and Columbia University (15-12).
In its first match of the evening, NYU captured all three weapons from Vassar. The Violets won 6-3 in both foil and epee, and were victorious 5-4 in sabre. Oung-Jo Yuh won all three of his foil bouts, while Byron Neslund and Ricky Woodward did likewise in epee. Sam Roukas and Ben Radding each posted two sabre wins.
In their next match, the Violets again captured all three weapons, taking foil and epee by identical 5-4 scores and sabre 6-3. Yuh and Neslund added two more victories in their respective weapons, while Roukas and Radding, as well as co-captain Jared Hammond, collected two sabre wins each.
Then, in the final bout of the evening, NYU's dominant performance in sabre earned them the victory over their Ivy league opponent. The Violets won 8-1 in sabre, enough to overcome losses in epee (5-4) and foil (6-3). Hammond and Redding won all three of their bouts, with Roukas capturing two. Woodward won two more epee bouts, while Alexander Kao recorded two foil victories.
The team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they compete at the Intercollegiate Fencing Championships (IFA) Championships at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA
