The New York University men's fencing team hosted its annual invitational at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Sunday, Jan. 25.
Four teams ranked in the U.S. College Fencing Coach's poll competed at the invitational: #2 University of Notre Dame, #3 Ohio State University, #4 Columbia University, and #9 St. John's University.
The Violets won two of their five matches in the competition, raising their overall record to 5-7 on the season.
After falling to Ohio State 23-4 in the first round, NYU rebounded to defeat Wayne State University in the second by a score of 17-10.
The Violets dropped a close third-round match to St. John's 16-11 despite a 7-2 win by the foil team. However, NYU came back and defeated Yale, winning a nail-biter against the Bulldogs, 14-13.
In the final round, the NYU men dropped a 21-6 decision to Notre Dame, although sophomore epeeist Byron Neslund recorded an impressive 3-0 mark.
Neslund was the Violets' top performer of the day, posting an 11-4 record in epee, including two 3-0 marks against Yale and Notre Dame.
The NYU men's fencing team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31, as it travels to Medford, MA, to face-off against Tufts University.
