The New York University men's swimming &diving team started the year in unique fashion Saturday against Springfield College, finishing in a tie at 121.5 apiece.
The meet came down to the last relay where Springfield College claimed first and third place to add 13 points to its total.
“It was swimming's equivalent of a tie in the ninth inning of baseball,” said NYU head coach Bob Sorensen.
Senior tri-captain Paul Hogan was victorious in both distance events. He finished the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.69 and swam the 1,000 freestyle in 10:01.03.
Freshman James Bedell won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.56. He also placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:00.95) and was a member of the second-place 200-freestyle relay team (1:27.15).
Senior tri-captain Eric Wang was victorious in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 2:01.07. He placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.67) and was a member of the winning 400-medley relay team (3:42.17).
After a training trip to Florida over winter break, Sorensen admits his team was tired. But, he still raved about their efforts.
“It was actually beneficial to swim tired and to see how far we could push the team,” Sorensen said.
Diving senior captain Cooper Morton earned third place in the one-meter dive with 217.28 points. He finished fourth in the three-meter event, accumulating 213.75 points.
The Violets return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 24, against the College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ at 2pm.
