Khmelnitskaya brought NYU women's volleyball to national prominence. The 2002 UAA Rookie of the Year and 2003 UAA Player of the Year, Khmelnitskaya led her squad to three straight Division III Elite Eight appearances, back-to-back Final Four appearances and the NCAA Division III National Championship Match in 2003.
