Savarese led NYU football through some of its most successful years. He was dubbed "Stonecutter Savarese" by the New York Times after being the only player to score a touchdown against Fordham's infamous “Seven Blocks of Granite" in 1936. An All-America mention at halfback in 1936, Savarese started his college football career as the high scorer on the undefeated 1934 NYU freshman team.
