Gilhooley, a 1950 graduate of NYU's School of Education,  set the World Record for flat track in the 600-yard indoor event at the Pioneer Club Championships in 1949. A five-time Metropolitan Collegiate Champion, four-time Metropolitan AAU Champion, and a five-time Penn Relays Champion, Gilhooley was also a member of two IC4A Championship relay teams.
