As the 14th President of New York University, Dr. Oliva was instrumental in shaping the concept and execution of the University Athletic Association (UAA) as the most unique athletic conference in the nation. Founded on the concept that athletic and academic excellence are not mutually exclusive, the UAA represented the only non-geography based conference in the country (for men or women, or for Division I, II or III). Oliva was a driving force in the return of varsity men's basketball and other varsity athletic programs to NYU in 1982, and he remained a staunch supporter and fan of NYU's varsity athletic teams, frequently traveling to UAA competitions across the U.S. and cheering from the sidelines.
