Track & Field Teams Compete at UAA Championships

Five Violets Advance to Tomorrow's Final Sections

The New York University men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Chicago, IL, to compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, hosted by the University of Chicago, on Saturday, March 1.

The first event of the day, the 60-meter dash preliminary round, saw three Violets set new personal records, with two advancing to tomorrow's final.

In the men's section, Travis Perry crossed the line in 7.02 to finish seventh, qualifying for the final and setting a new personal best. Matt Marcelo finished in 17th place, clocking 7.26 to notch a personal best.

In the women's section, Seneca Guneratne recorded a time of 8.05 to take eighth place and qualify for tomorrow's final.

Dasha Jackson will advance to the final in the 60-meter hurdles after placing fourth in the preliminary round with a time of 9.40.

James Thompson finished in fifth place in the 400-meter dash preliminary section with a time of 51.50 seconds, advancing to tomorrow's final. Lincoln Tutor (52.99) and Beverly Okyere (1:01.11) each notched personal bests in the event.

Gianna Dawson will advance in the 800-meter run after posting a fifth-place finish in the preliminary round with a time of 2:16.38.

In the women's 5,000-meter run, Grace Rowley set a new personal best, finishing sixth in 17:39.00.

Oliver Fideler placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 6.62m.

Both squads entered the distance medley relay event. The women's team, consisting of Dawson, Katherine Cheng, Katherine Cochran, and Janie Cooper, took third overall with a time of 12:01.86. The men's team, consisting of Aleksander Jopek, Everett Jania, William Cornick, and Liam Hagerty, finished sixth with a time of 10:47.77.

With five events scored, the men's team sits tied for sixth place of seven teams with four points and the women rank seventh of seven teams with nine points.

The Violets will return to action tomorrow, March 2, for the second and final day of competition at the UAA Championships. Events are set to begin at 10:00am central time.
