The New York University wrestling team wrapped up day one of the NCAA DIII Regionals for Region III, hosted by Messiah University, on Friday, February 28, in Mechanicsburg, PA.
For this regional tournament, the top three wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships set for March 14-15
Ten wrestlers competed for the Violets, one in each weight class, and the team finished the day in fourth place with an overall score of 72.5.
Following Friday's competition, there are four NYU wrestlers that have yet to lose a match:
Jacob Venezia (133),
Tyler Kadish (141),
Cooper Pontelandolfo (157), and
Trent Furman (184). These wrestlers will compete in the tournament's semifinals on day two, where a win would secure a spot in the National Championship.
Venezia's victories came via MD (15-2) and TF (15-0). Kadish won by fall at 1:55 and the second win was a result of an injury forfeit. Pontelandolfo continues his undefeated season, adding two more TF (17-2)(19-4) to his season total. Finally, Furman won his first bout by fall at 1:15 and his second by an 8-3 decision.
Harrison Gordon (125),
Vincenzo Napolitana (149),
Hassan Khan (165), and
Nicky Bell (174) are still in contention for a third place finish as long as they win their remaining consolation matches on day two.
"As expected, it was a roller coaster ride today," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "In the end, we have eight guys who can all punch their tickets tomorrow."
The wrestlers return to the mat for day two of the tournament tomorrow beginning at 10:00 am.
