The New York University wrestling team competed against 11 other schools at the Mideast Futures Tournament, hosted by The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), on Saturday, February 22, in Ewing, NJ.
16 different Violets participated across nine weight classes and totaled 82.5 team points, good for third place.
Competing in the 197-pound class,
Anthony DeRosa was the lone bracket winner of the day for NYU. After recording pins in the first and second rounds, DeRosa registered a regular decision in the semi-finals. He then claimed a major decision over Division II Millersville University's Mason Testerman to finish in first place.
In the 184-pound class,
Dmitry Derbedyenyev and
Jonah Ginsberg shared second place. Derbedyenyev posted falls in three of his four bouts, including one over the Marauders' Tyler Hurst. Ginsberg claimed a major decision in his opening bout followed by back-to-back regular decisions. With the two Violets scheduled to face each other in the final, a no-contest was declared.
Neale Pathak worked his way into the semi-finals of the 125-pound class, earning pins in the first two rounds of the bracket. In the third-place bout, Pathak recorded a regular decision for a top-three finish.
Alexander Kaufmann and
Finn Eskeland also placed third in the 165- and 174-pound classes, respectively. Both wrestlers were awarded byes in the first round of their respective brackets and won their next two bouts. While Kaufmann posted a major decision to land third place, Eskeland claimed a fall in his third-place bout.
NYU will next take part in the NCAA Regionals, hosted by Messiah University, beginning Friday, February 28, in Grantham, PA.
