The
#19-ranked New York University wrestling team dominated its way to a second consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, February 15, in Cleveland, OH, hosted by Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).
The Violets earned individual titles in seven of the 10 weight classes and registered 123.5 team points.
As the number one seed in the 125-pound class,
Harrison Gordon quickly worked his way through the competition, registering a tech fall in the first round before pinning his opponent in the second round. A no-contest in the third round gave Gordon the title for the first time in his career.
After being awarded a bye in the quarter-finals,
Vincenzo Napolitana held on to a 5-2 decision in the semi-finals for a chance at the 149-pound title. He then edged out a 7-6 win over Brendan Connolly of the University of Chicago to place first, improving on his third-place finish at last year's UAA Championship.
Cooper Pontelandolfo continued his unblemished season with a tech fall in the semi-finals of the 157-pound class, followed by a 6-1 decision in the final. Pontelandolfo has now improved to 27-0 and 15 tech falls on the year. Additionally, it was his third career UAA title.
Hassan Khan pinned each of his three opponents in the 165-pound class, including a fall in less than 30 seconds in the opening round. Despite being down 3-2 in his third bout, Khan pinned the Maroons' Nicholas Cheshier. He capped off his day with a major decision in the fifth round. It was Khan's second UAA title and first in the 165-pound class.
Starting off in the semi-finals of the 174-pound class,
Nicky Bell posted a major decision before facing off against fellow Violet
Finn Eskeland in the final. Eskeland earned his way into the title bout after knocking off the number one seeded Tyler Joseph of UChicago. Bell was able to pin Eskeland to win his second UAA title and first in the 174-pound class.
Following a pin in less than a minute of the opening round of the 184-pound class,
Trent Furman recorded a fall in the second round as well, giving him his second consecutive UAA title and third all-time.
Bennett Sonneborn capped off the day with a pair of falls in the 285-pound class to earn NYU's seventh individual title.
Tyler Kadish was named the conference's Rookie of the Year, while the Violets' coaching staff earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
"Proud of the way our guys competed today," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "Big statement made winning seven out of the 10 weight classes. A lot of momentum moving into post-season!"
NYU will next travel to Trinity College on Friday, February 21, in Hartford, CT, to close out its dual season.
