The New York University men's and women's track & field teams competed at the NYC Gotham Open on Friday, January 17, at the Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY.
The Violets posted a pair of victories in the non-team scoring competition.
For the women,
Gianna Dawson bested a field of 32 runners in the 800 meters, taking the race in a time of 2:18.16.
Katharine Frank placed 11th in 2:24.70.
On the men's side,
Travis Perry tied for first place in the 60-meter dash. In a field of 38, Perry clocked a personal-best time of 7.07.
In the 3000 meters,
Stella Kuttner posted a fifth-place finish in 10:15.39.
Jake Chang took 15th place (8:49.72) in the men's race.
Out in the field for the men,
Isaac Tu and
Nishad Sankar each went 13.15 meters in the triple jump, while
Oliver Fideler took 10th in the long jump (6.49 meters).
For the women,
Areyanna McCarthy was 15th in the triple jump (10.57m).
"It was great to officially kick off the track season," said Head Coach Tyler Deck Shipley. "There were some very encouraging efforts and I was impressed with several people beginning the season with PR's. We look forward to continuing our improvement throughout the season."
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action when they compete in the Dr. Sanders Scorcher, hosted by Columbia University, on Friday, January 24, at the Armory in Manhattan.
