It was a record-breaking performance for New York University's women's swimming & diving team, which achieved an all-time best placement in program history at the March 20-23 NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, NC.
The Violets placed third out of 40 teams with 374 points.
Sophomore
Kaley McIntyre won three individual national titles, was a member of one national championship relay and was named NCAA Division III Women's Swimmer of the Year.
Earlier in the season, she was also named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Swimmer of the Year.
McIntyre smashed two NCAA records, clocking 22.46 in the 50 freestyle and 48.79 in the 100 freestyle. Apart from cementing her name into the national record books, McIntyre was also National Champion in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.05, and a member of NYU's championship 800 freestyle relay (7:16.20).
"Kaley's 100 was remarkable," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele, who was named NCAA Division III Women's Coach of the Year. "The record she broke was one of the oldest in the books. As usual, she dominated from start to finish and just kept pouring it on.
"She is so deserving of Swimmer of the Year," Miele continued. "She is the most consistent racer I have ever coached and she deserves all the accolades and praise. She's unbelievable and unbeatable."
The Violets had a number of National Champions, as junior
Caitlin Marshall captured the 200 butterfly (1:58.5) while also taking second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle (4:49.46) and 1650 freestyle (16:41.99). Marshall was also a member of NYU's National Championship 800 freestyle relay along with McIntyre, sophomore
Nicole Ranile and freshman
Aanya Wala. All of these performances set new NYU school records, including Marshall's 1000 freestyle (10:06.84) within her 1650 swim.
Further NYU records were broken by the 200 medley relay team (1:41.42) consisting of senior
Jolie Le Fauve, junior
Isabel Oldham, senior
Emily Ma, and freshman
Hope Xayaveth. Another record was set by the Violets' national runner-up 400 freestyle relay (3:21.04) team of Marshall, McIntyre, Oldham, and Ranile.
The 400 medley relay squad also earned All-American honors for their fifth-place, NYU-record time of 3:42.99. That foursome consisted of McIntyre, Ranile, junior
Anna Li, and freshman
Reina Gomez. Freshman
Calista Lynch also earned All-America for her sixth-place finish in the 400 IM (4:23.67), as did freshman
Grace Baik with an eighth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:03.56).
Overall, the women earned 32 All-America honors, eight Honorable Mention All-America honors, and set 11 NYU program records.
"An absolutely incredible meet," Miele concluded. "I am so impressed with our team. From day one they worked their butts off, swam well in Chicago in November, were even better at the UAA's, and killed it at NCAA's. Just a truly incredible and historic season."
