Wrestling Competes at Wildcat Open

Bell Places 3rd at 184 to Lead NYU

New York University's wrestling team, ranked 10th in the national tournament rankings, competed at the Wildcat Open, hosted by Johnson & Wales University, in Providence, RI, on Sunday, January 28.

The Violets placed eighth out of 13 teams with 30 points. Nicky Bell was NYU's standout, placing third in the 184-pound bracket.

Bell won his first two matches via pin, in 5:00 and 4:49, before dropping a closely-contested bout to Kenneth Marra of the United States Coast Guard Academy, 14-12. Bell then won via medical forfeit from his opponent to secure third place, losing another narrow, 4-1 decision in his final outing of the day.

At 133, Jacob Venezia recorded a pair of falls, over Roger Williams University's Tyler Lanci (3:57) and Coast Guard's Jason Guglietta (3:32). John Mairano notched a major decision victory at 157, posting a 16-1 tech fall against Rhode Island College's Christopher Henzey.

Mark Dickey represented NYU at 174, with his two wins of the day coming via 12-2 major decision against RIC's Roel Johnson and a 5:34 fall over RWU's Paul Trombi.

The Violets return home to take on Coast Guard and Bridgewater State University in a quad-meet on Saturday, February 3, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. It will also be Senior Day for NYU with a ceremony scheduled to take place before the event, which begins at 1:00pm.
