New York University's wrestling team, ranked 10th in the
national tournament rankings, competed at the Wildcat Open, hosted by Johnson & Wales University, in Providence, RI, on Sunday, January 28.
The Violets placed eighth out of 13 teams with 30 points.
Nicky Bell was NYU's standout, placing third in the 184-pound bracket.
Bell won his first two matches via pin, in 5:00 and 4:49, before dropping a closely-contested bout to Kenneth Marra of the United States Coast Guard Academy, 14-12. Bell then won via medical forfeit from his opponent to secure third place, losing another narrow, 4-1 decision in his final outing of the day.
At 133,
Jacob Venezia recorded a pair of falls, over Roger Williams University's Tyler Lanci (3:57) and Coast Guard's Jason Guglietta (3:32).
John Mairano notched a major decision victory at 157, posting a 16-1 tech fall against Rhode Island College's Christopher Henzey.
Mark Dickey represented NYU at 174, with his two wins of the day coming via 12-2 major decision against RIC's Roel Johnson and a 5:34 fall over RWU's Paul Trombi.
The Violets return home to take on Coast Guard and Bridgewater State University in a quad-meet on Saturday, February 3, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. It will also be Senior Day for NYU with a ceremony scheduled to take place before the event, which begins at 1:00pm.
