Kane Qualifies for 1500 Finals at Nationals

Rookie places 3rd in her prelim heat, set for finals race on Saturday

Viv Kane of New York University's women's track and field team qualified for the national finals in the 1500-meter run on the first day of the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday evening in Rochester, NY.

Kane placed third in her 11-person heat and fifth overall with a time of 4:29.79 which was .02 seconds behind fourth-place Gillian Roeder of MIT. The top four finishers in each heat, plus the next four best times, qualified for the finals race.

"Viv ran a really intelligent race, closing well over the bell lap to safely qualify for Saturday's final," said head coach Tyler Deck Shipley. "She's excited and ready for another racing opportunity on Saturday."

The Massachusetts native was the highest-finishing rookie in the event as one of three first-years to qualify.

Seven of the 12 competitors in the women's 1500 finals are from University Athletic Association (UAA) institutions as Kane is joined by runners from Emory University, the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis.

The finals race will take place on Saturday, May 27, at 1:35 p.m. at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester.
