New York University's
tenth-ranked men's and
tenth-ranked women's swimming and diving teams hosted the first day of the NYU Winter Invitational at the Palladium Natatorium on Friday.
The men recorded their fourth team record of the season while the men's and women's teams combined added three more qualifiers to their NCAA Division III National Championships squad.
Roger Williams University, Maine Maritime Academy and Lehman College are also competing at the Violets' final regular meet of the season.
Swimming:
The men's 200 medley A relay squad powered to 1:29.15 in a pool empty of other competitors to shave 0.16 seconds off the program record from 2014-15. They also made an NCAA qualification cut.
Leo Han led off the backstroke leg, followed by
James Yan in the breaststroke,
Ajay Watanakun in the butterfly, and
David Basin in the freestyle.
Nathaniel Yeoh finished first in the men's 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:38.30, an NCAA Q cut.
Tyler Walters placed second, recording 1:39.63 for a B cut and posting a personal best by 0.7 seconds. Walter's performance earned him a spot on the Violets' 800 freestyle relay at the National Championships.
Jack Rogers dropped nearly a second in the men's 200 butterfly to win with a career best of 1:52.64.
"Jack swam a great race to go a personal best," Head Coach
Trevor Miele said.
On the women's side,
Kyra Chen dominated the mixed 1650 freestyle, winning in 17:19.17 to take 1.63 seconds off her personal record
set just a week ago at the University Athletic Association Championships.
Caitlin Marshall dropped over a second in the women's 200 individual medley.
"Overall, we had a great day," Miele said. "The team posted several qualification cuts that put us in a fantastic position for NCAA selections."
Diving:
Earlier on Friday in the diving session, the Violets competed in the three-meter. While RWU, MMA and Lehman did not send any divers, four men and one woman represented NYU.
