The New York University
tenth-ranked women's swimming & diving team wrapped up the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday in Atlanta, GA with a slew of top-ten performances and six additional NCAA Division III qualification cuts.
The women finished in third with 1,530 points. Second-ranked host Emory University won (1,872) while fifth-ranked University of Chicago was second (1,638). Combined with the men, NYU was third overall (2,707) behind Emory (3,620) and Chicago (3,360.50).
Swimming:
Kaley McIntyre earned Women's UAA Rookie of the Year for her stacked meet resumé, which included two first-place swims and two individual program records, in addition to two relay records, prior to Saturday. On the final day of the meet, she added a third victory to her roster with a 200 backstroke win in 1:59.09. Her time is the second-fastest across DIII and a personal best by over half a second.
Finishing right behind McIntyre in the 200 was
Jessica Flynn, clocking 1:59.33 to secure the top two podium spots for the Violets. Flynn also recorded a personal best by 0.76 seconds to sit in third across DIII.
"Jess and Kaley swam great races," Head Coach
Trevor Miele said. "They were trailing at the 100 and fought back to blow by the leader and finish 1-2."
The Violets also stole the show in the 200 butterfly.
Caitlin Marshall won the event, hitting the wall in 2:00.10.
Nicole Ranile placed third in 2:02.22 while
Emery Muller was fourth (2:05.09) and
Isabella Brosvik was sixth (2:06.63).
"The women's 200 fly was fun to watch with four ladies in the final," Miele commented. "They have worked so hard all year and it was cool to see them dominate the event."
In the 1650 freestyle,
Georgia Basil finished second in 17:04.02 to storm past her previous best time of 17:17.55.
"Georgia's mile was amazing," Miele said. "She split it so well and dropped a ton of time. It was very impressive."
Following Basil with a time of 17:20.80,
Kyra Chen placed seventh in the mile with a massive personal best by 28.66 seconds.
The 400 freestyle A relay team finished third in 3:25.23.
Basil, Chen, McIntyre, Flynn, Marshall and Ranile all posted NCAA qualification cuts.
Diving:
The women's diving squad completed UAA competition with the one-meter.
Issara Schmidt, the only Violet to advance to the finals, placed third with a score of 436.55.
"Issara missed her first dive in the finals and could have given up, but she didn't," Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean said. "She fought back like the champion she is!"
Meera Kasturi finished ninth overall with 409.40 while
Katherine Nardone concluded her final UAA Championships in 16th with 375.40.
"It was a good day for NYU diving," Kolean said. "Freshman Meera had a great first campaign, just missing finals on the one-meter by a few points. Katherine dove very well and ended up on the back end of a very, very close preliminary. Just a few points separated a bunch of divers. I'm proud of this team."
The Violets will take a short break from competition until Friday, February 17, when they will host the NYU Winter Invite at the Palladium Natatorium for their final meet before the end-of-season championships.
