Track & Field Teams Back in Action

10 Violets PR, Two Take First as NYU Opens 2023-24 Season

The New York University men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2023-24 season at the FastTrack National Invitational held at Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Athletic Center in Staten Island, NY, on Friday, December 1.

The Violets first meet of the season saw 10 athletes set new personal bests while freshman Seneca Guneratne and graduate student Sammie Seamon placed first in the 60-meter dash and 3k, respectively.

Guneratne beat out the field of 22 with a final time of 8.07 in her first collegiate competition while Seamon took first with a time of 10:41.19 also in a 22-person field.

Two personal-best times came in the 60-meter hurdle prelims as Dasha Jackson (9.46) and Mackenzie Richard (9.91) surpassed their top times from last season. Jackson continued to the 60-meter finals finishing third overall with a time of 9.47.

Jorge Rocha notched a 16-second personal best in the men's 3k posting an 8:58.71 finish to take third in the 23-person field.

In the 400-meter dash, Austin Cabanban set a new personal best with his sixth-place, 50.24 finish and Laila Goodman crossed the line in 1:01.73 to take 15th and top her last season's PR of 1:03.03.

On the field side, Kai Aravena set a new personal best in the shotput throwing 10.76m.

In the pit, three Violets achieved new personal records: Isaac Tu jumped 12.92m in the long jump while Areyanna McCarthy and Jackson posted 11.01m and 10.98m, respectively, in the triple jump.

Both the men's and women's teams were represented in the 4x400-meter relay. The women's team consisting of Goodman, Richard, McCarthy, and Fiona Kelleher finished in 4:16.25 to take ninth and the men's team consisting of Emmanuel Brito, Travis Perry, Cabanban, and Stanley Hir posted a tenth-place finish in 3.29.64.

Grace Richardson and Viv Kane of the distance squad will compete in the 5k at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University in Boston, MA, tomorrow, Saturday, December 2.

Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action for the Seahawk Shootout back at the Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Athletic Center in Staten Island, NY, on Friday, December 8.
