Wrestlers Compete at NYS Intercollegiate Open

Anderson Posts Highest Finish for NYU

The New York University wrestling team competed at the New York State Intercollegiate Open on Saturday, January 21, in Rochester, NY.

There was no team scoring.

Individually, heavyweight Evan Anderson produced the best finish for NYU, placing second in his bracket. Anderson advanced to the finals with a bye and then winning two decisions. However, he lost a decision to Lucas Stoddard of NCAA Division I United States Military Academy (Army) in the finals.

A pair of Violets produced fourth-place finishes.

At 125 pounds, Taisei Kurachi recorded two major decision victories and a fall to advance to the third-place match where he fell to Joseph Petrone of Nassau Community College.

Also taking fourth was Gabe Rodrigues at 197 pounds. He utilized a bye, a medical forfeit, a fall, and a decision to advance to the third-place match before losing to Danny Lawrence of Army.

Hassan Khan (165) and Nicky Bell (184) each produced fifth-place finishes.

"This was obviously a tough tournament going against many Division I teams like Army, Buffalo and Binghamton," said Associate Head Coach Corey Luce. "But, many of our wrestlers still came through with strong performances."

The wrestlers return to action next weekend, traveling to the Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday and New Jersey City University on Saturday.
