Wrestling Team Opens 2022-23 Season

Violets Take Second Place in Debut

The New York University wrestling team, ranked #10 in the nation in the NWCA Preseason Poll,  had a strong showing in its opening competition of the 2022-23 season.

The Violets placed second at the Ned McGinley Invitational at King's College on Saturday, November 5, in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

NYU totaled 119 points, nine ahead of #8 York (PA), and second only to #7 Stevens (139.5) in the 11-team competition.

Headlining the team's efforts was All-American Cooper Pontelandolfo, who beat all four opponents en route to winning the 165-pound bracket. He recorded one fall and two technical falls along the way, allowing only one point in his four bouts.

A sixth-place finisher at last year's NCAA Divsion III Championships, it was the sophomore's second McGinley title.

"He was dominant," said Associate Head Coach Corey Luce.

Three team members posted second-place finishes in their respective weight classes: Hassan Khan (157), Jason Geyer (174) and Nick Kruczynski (141). Kahn and Kruczynski each recorded one fall, but lost by decisions in the finals. Geyer posted one major decision, but did not compete in the finals due to a medical forfeit

NYU also had one third-place finisher, KJ Sherman, also at 141, who produced two technical falls and one fall along the way.

"Overall, we are happy with today's performance," Luce added. "We had a few freshmen step up and show us that they are ready to challenge for starting roles on this team."

The squad will return to action next Saturday, November 12, at the Racich Rumble, hosted by Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.
