New York University's
10th-ranked wrestling team finished fifth of 14 teams at Ursinus College's Racich Rumble in Collegeville, PA, on Saturday, November 12.
"We wrestled in only seven of the 10 weight classes," explained Head Coach
Bruce Haberli. "But the 12 wrestlers we had competed well."
Jason Geyer led the way for NYU, winning the 174 bracket with a pin against Brian Torres of SUNY Cortland in the title bout.
"Geyer dominated every match he was in from start to finish while picking up a pin in the finals," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "He made a statement today that he's a contender for a national title."
Returning All-American
Cooper Pontelandolfo also had a strong showing, finishing second via a 3-1 sudden victory at 165 as he fell to Alvernia's Matt Lackman, who is ranked second nationally in the weight class.
"We had Cooper losing in overtime in the finals to the same wrestler he faced at the NCAA Championships for fifth place last year," Haberli added. "It was the best match of the day."
Rookie
KJ Sherman wrestled his way to the title match at 141 as well, but was defeated by Cahal Donovan of Cortland in the final.
Trent Furman secured third place at 157, defeating Jared Osborne of Johns Hopkins in his final bout of the day.
Matt Kelly finished fifth at 184 and
Tyler Crew came in sixth at 133.
NYU finished with 102.5 points, just one behind fourth-place York (PA). Alvernia won the competition with 123 points.
The Violets return to the mat on Saturday, November 19 at Springfield College's Doug Parker Invitational in Springfield, MA.
