The New York University Women's Basketball Team was playing on a different court, but the results were the same.
Hosting Case Western Reserve University in the first game on their temporary home court at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, the
#5-ranked Violets (11-0, 2-0) remained undefeated with an 86-62 victory over the Spartans (5-8, 0-2) in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday, January 14.
NYU trailed 10-9 late in the opening quarter, scored the next four points and never trailed again.
"We were able to shake off some early rust," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "We talked a lot about bringing defensive intensity and I thought that showed tonight."
The lead expanded to as many as 13 in the second quarter before the Violets settled for a 45-35 halftime lead. They scored the first six points of the third and the lead eventually ballooned to as many as 24 points, 64-40, on Biana Notarainni's layup with 2:57 left in the quarter.
However, the Spartans scored the final seven points of the session and NYU's lead was cut to 17, 64-47, heading into the final quarter.
The streak continued as Case Western Reserve scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to pull within 14.
A
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) layup halted the run, but a three-ball from the Spartans' Savannah Glimpse cut the lead to 13.
However, that was as close as they would come as NYU again built its lead to 24 at the end.
"I was feeling really confident and I just want to give credit to my teammates for finding me when I was open," said
Erica Miller (Alamo, CA/Carondelet), who scored a game-high 17 points including 5-of-10 from three-point range. "We're really excited about how we've been playing and we just want to keep it going."
Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) added 16 points and
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) had 13 while collecting a team-high seven rebounds.
Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) dished out seven assists and Pellecchia recorded seven steals as Case Western Reserve was forced into 19 turnovers.
"Once again our defensive effort and our depth really showed tonight," Barber added. "Everyone who got into the game was really exceptional."
The Violets return to the court to host Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, January 16, at 2:00 pm in Brooklyn.
