The New York University Men's Soccer Team continued its early-season roll with a 10-0 victory over Hunter College on Tuesday, September 21, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The shutout was NYU's fifth of the season and second double-digit scoring effort. The Violets defeated Baruch College 10-0 on September 15.
"We're always talking about maintaining discipline and staying focused," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "We have to just keep playing like we're playing on the field, no matter the situation."
The Violets (6-0-1) scored early and often in the first half, with
Arkan Tahsildaroglu (Istanbul, Turkey/Berkshire School (MA)) getting things started with an unassisted goal just 7:21 into the game. He also scored the second goal at 11:51 and added the team's sixth goal at 27:54 as NYU led 6-0 at the half. It was the sophomore's second-straight hat trick, giving him 10 goals through his first seven collegiate games.
In between Tahsildaroglu's second and sixth tallies, NYU got goals from
Alex Rovirosa-Illa (Llinars del Valles, Barcelona/Hamelin Laie International ) (13:03),
Connor Reynolds (Farmington, CT/Avon Old Farms)—the first of his collegiate career—(14:17) and
Oliver Kleban (Denver, CO/Blind Brook) (19:11).
Overall, the Violets recorded 20 shots in the first half, 12 on goal, while the Hawks (0-5-0) had only two shots with one being saved on a full-extension dive by NYU's starting goalkeeper
Luca Mancuso (Miami, FL/Montverde Academy).
Freshman
Ben Trask (San Diego, CA/Sage Creek) notched his first collegiate goal less than two minutes into the second half (43:14) as the Violets continued to light up the scoreboard.
The barrage continued when
Nathan Bennett (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored on a free kick at 31:30, continued on
Keegan Ledger's (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) goal 15 minutes later and concluded on
Nasib McDonald's (St. Andrew, Jamaica/Milton Academy) with 8:12 remaining.
Freshman
Chaz Bond (Northfield, IL/New Trier) made his collegiate debut in goal for the Violets in the second half, but did not need to make a save on Hunter's only shot of the final 45 minutes. NYU added 25 shots after the break, 11 on goal.
"We're playing with a lot of confidence right now," Wyant added. "We're scoring good goals and preparing ourselves for Messiah on Saturday and the UAA schedule ahead."
The Violets return to action this Saturday, September 25, when they host Messiah College at 4:00 pm back at Gaelic Park.
