In just a few days, New York University varsity athletes will once again be doing what they love to do best…return to the fields, courts and courses for intercollegiate competition.
"Without a doubt, the last year and a half has challenged all of us to adapt and to adjust in ways that none of us were prepared for," said
Stuart Robinson, NYU's Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics. "Resilient, our student-athletes are now on the doorstep of competing again, and I could not be happier and excited for them."
In March 2020, the coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of New York University varsity sports.
However, on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, NYU's men's and women's cross country teams (@Vassar 6:00pm), the women's volleyball team (home 7:00pm), the women's soccer team (@Mt. St. Mary 7:00pm), and the men's soccer team (home 7:30pm) are all scheduled to be back in action, and the return of NYU varsity competition will be official.
"We are beyond excited to be back in the gym as a volleyball family," said NYU Women's Volleyball Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "Sports are so much more than just the X's and O's. It's being able to set goals, build relationships, express passion, create unity, and display a love for the game. This is what's been missing for so many student-athletes during Covid, and we are ready to cross the bridge and return to competition."
In addition to those five teams opening on the 1st, the fall schedule also includes the return to play for men's and women's golf (September 4 @St. Lawrence), women's tennis (September 11 @Vassar) and men's tennis (September 25 @TCNJ).
University Athletic Association (UAA) competition returns for the Violets on September 18 when the women's volleyball team faces the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis at Round Robin #1, hosted by Chicago. The men's and women's soccer teams open UAA play at Case Western University in Cleveland, OH, on October 2.
"Given the circumstances of the last year, we've all gained a bit of perspective," said
Sam March (Glastonbury, CT/Kingswood Oxford School), a senior on the women's soccer team. "We're happy to reunite, to kick a soccer ball and to compete in games wearing an NYU jersey. We have chemistry, talent and enormous potential. Maintaining joy and positive energy is what's going to make us successful this year."
Due to a NYC Executive Order and NYU policies regarding campus visitors, spectators will not be permitted at least through the month of September. Please continue to check back for updates regarding these policies. In the meantime, please watch webcasts of all our home competitions at
