Women's Basketball Cruises Past Wesleyan

Violets Improve to 7-0 with 91-46 Win

The #15-ranked New York University Women's Basketball Team continued to roll, improving to 7-0 on the season with a 91-46 victory over Wesleyan University (CT) at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility on Sunday, December 5.

Thirteen Violets scored as the team shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from three-point range in a convincing win on their home court. It was a rematch of a 2019-20 contest in which NYU won in overtime, but this time around it was all NYU from start to finish.

"I think it's the growth of our program," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "Our young players are contributing at a really high level. The season is young so right now what we're concerned about is getting better every opportunity we have to step on the floor."

Both sides started slowly with Wesleyan holding a 6-5 lead after an Emma Kiernan basket halfway through the first. The Violets closed the quarter on a 16-3 run, however, capped off by an Erica Miller (Alamo, CA/Carondelet) triple that gave them a 21-9 edge after one.

NYU extended its run to 30-6 over the first 6:07 of the second as they took control with a 35-12 advantage after a Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) finish at the rim. The Violets entered halftime leading 45-22 behind red-hot 71.4 percent shooting (10-for-14) in the second quarter.

The hosts never let Wesleyan claw back, scoring three of the first four buckets of the third and eventually opening up a 40-point lead (73-33) heading into the final frame.

Chloe Teter (Little Silver, NJ/Red Bank Regional) scored all six of her points in the fourth and Natalie Pence (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) hit a pair of threes as NYU came away with its seventh double-digit victory in as many games.

"The team is starting to learn each other's strengths individually," Barber added. "They're doing a great job finding each other and being unselfish, just having a little bit more patience on offense so that we execute. Today we clicked and it was a lot of fun to be a part of."

Miller and Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) tied for game-high honors with 12 points apiece as Miller went 4-for-6 from deep. Shelton (6-for-10 FG) added six boards and three assists.

Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) was the third Violet in double-figures (10 points) while racking up career highs of eight assists and six steals.

Janowski finished with nine points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals.

"We've all just trusted each other and gelled really well over the past seven games," Janowski said. "I know where my teammates like the ball and they know where I like it. We've really worked together and have grown together to learn where we'll all succeed. I really think it's just our selflessness. We really want to share the ball and want our teammates to succeed."

Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) protected the paint throughout the game for NYU, collecting four blocks along with six points and four boards.

Next up, the Violets begin a stretch of three-straight games against CUNYAC opponents when they take on Hunter College on the road this Friday, December 10. Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm.
